History of Hollywood Hills
The neighborhood’s history dates back to 1923 when Harry Chandler, Sidney H. Woodruff, and General M. H. Sherman started developing 500 acres of land at the foot of Mt. Lee. To advertise this new community, they decided to put up what would become the iconic Hollywood sign—though it spelled out “Hollywoodland” at the time, the area’s original name.
