Palisades

With the fresh air, stunning oceanfront views, and picture-perfect sunsets, Pacific Palisades may feel like a remote beach getaway. In reality, it’s just an 18-mile drive to downtown Los Angeles.

It’s this ability to effortlessly marry two opposing qualities that make Pacific Palisades such a special place. It’s both luxurious and laid-back. It caters to beach lovers and mountain hikers alike. It’s suburban yet provides easy access to L.A.’s urban perks.

As you’d expect from one of the city’s premier communities, living in Pacific Palisades means living in leisure. There’s the Riviera Country Club, which has hosted both the US Open and the PGA Championships. If you’d like to relax, take a stroll in any of the area’s three large parks. And to get your fitness game on, hit the neighborhood’s excellent biking and hiking trails.

In short, Pacific Palisades takes everything you love about the L.A. lifestyle and puts a low-key, beach-town spin on it. And that’s why this coveted neighborhood is one of Niche.com’s best places to raise a family in.

History of Pacific Palisades

The history of Pacific Palisades is a case study in turning missed opportunities into good fortune. After losing its bid to become Los Angeles’ main seaport in the 1870s, the area banked on its beachfront location and transformed itself into a leisure destination. When beach and country clubs began dotting its shoreline, the area soon became a popular retreat for L.A.’s creme de la creme.

Pacific Palisades’ beautiful surroundings made it a haven for both artists and intellectuals. In the 1940s, millionaire Huntington Hartford built an artists’ colony here, which greatly elevated the neighborhood’s profile. The community would continue to flourish and today it is home to A-list personalities like J.J. Abrams, Ben Affleck, and Jamie Lee Curtis, just to name a few.
