Brentwood
Few places in West Los Angeles are as aspirational as Brentwood, one of the city’s most affluent neighborhoods. Residents here enjoy unmatched privacy and exclusivity, as the area has one of the lowest population densities in L.A. Is it any wonder why elite personalities like LeBron James, Gwenyth Paltrow, and Arnold Schwarzenegger call it home?
Living in Brentwood also means getting the best of both worlds, as you’re only ever a short drive away from Mount Diablo’s hiking trails and Santa Monica’s sparkling beaches. The convenient location is a big draw for residents, who are wellness-focused and love spending time outdoors.
Despite its proximity to cosmopolitan Los Angeles City, Brentwood maintains a decidedly suburban and family-friendly vibe. Streets are safe and highly walkable, and there are many parks to relax in. It’s also home to some truly noteworthy attractions, such as the Getty Center, Brentwood Country Club, and the George Sturges House.
If you’d like to call this neighborhood home, here’s everything you need to know about it.
History of Brentwood
The area now known as Brentwood was part of the Rancho San Vicente and Santa Monica land grants. However, parts of it were sold to the U.S. after the Mexican-American War.
In 1887, the founders of Santa Monica donated a parcel of land so the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers could be built. Before long, a small community called Westgate was established on the facility’s western section. Westgate was annexed to the city of Los Angeles in 1916 and eventually changed its name to Brentwood.
What really put Brentwood on the map, however, was the 1932 Olympics, which used the neighborhood as the venue for several events. Today, Brentwood has become an upscale community that stands toe-to-toe with other iconic L.A. addresses like Beverly Hills, Bel-Air, and Pacific Palisades.
